Use this maths diagnostic assessment to discover strengths and weaknesses in your student’s number sense understanding. You can use the data collected to target intervention using the Mathtastic program.

This maths diagnostic assessment will show you which strategies from the 8 number sense strategies they are using and also which need to be taught to enable them to be efficient and fluent in their mathematical calculations.

There are 8 number strategies which provide the foundation of mathematical understanding:

1. Subitizing
2. add and subtract a small number
3. count on or count back a small number to add or subtract
4. pairs to 10, 20 and 100
5. Place Value
6. add and subtract 8 and 9
7. Doubles
8. Near doubles

The diagnostic assessment is designed for teachers and tutors working with students who are struggling with the foundation of maths. Completing the assessment will identify which of the 8 number sense strategies are understood and which need support. Using the code provided you will be able to see which strategies the students are relying upon. In the example shown, you can see that the student was coded C: counted. This is useful diagnostic information of an area of student weakness and intervention.

From this data teachers can plan intervention to specifically target the weak skills. The data aligns directly with the Mathtastic program both for number sense strategies and also developmental level e.g. numbers to 10, or numbers to 20.
